About us

The Spanish National Chapter of the European Society for Biomechanics (ESB) was created on July 6, 2011 as a local representation of the society. The main mission of the Chapter is to put in contact professionals and researchers who carry out their work in the field of Biomechanics, promote university-clinic-company collaboration and encourage the dissemination and promotion of studies and research in Biomechanics in Spain.

The first 10 meetings of the Spanish Chapter took place in Zaragoza, Seville, Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid, Badajoz, Seville, Castellón de la Plana, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Granada respectively. In addition to the scientific quality of the papers that were presented, these events set important guidelines: at the first meeting the elections of the first Executive Committee took place, and at the second an important and fruitful space was dedicated to the transfer of technology in biomechanics, in addition to establishing the awards in recognition of the scientific quality of the work of the members of the Chapter.

Goals

In line with the previous meetings, the objectives of the meeting are:

Present the lines of work of the different Spanish groups in the field of Biomechanics.
Chapter and the European Society of Biomechanics within other Spanish groups whose research is in the context of Biomechanics.
Promote the creation of collaborations between the different groups that work in Biomechanics in Spain.
Serve as a meeting point for clinicians, doctors and professionals with an interest in Biomechanics.
Present the progress and new initiatives from the Executive Committee and collect the opinions of the members of the Chapter to establish the roadmap for the following year.

The meeting of the Chapter will take place in the «Betancourt Building» of the Escuela de Ingeniería y Arquitectura, which is located in the Campus Universitario Río Ebro of the Universidad de Zaragoza.

From my PhD (2000) onwards, I successfully bridged from a classical human movement science and physical therapy profile towards an integrated biomedical science and biomedical engineering profile, exploiting maximally the use of 3D motion capture and multi-body simulation techniques to advance the understanding on pathological movement. The two-year postdoctoral stay at the bioengineering department at Stanford University (Prof Delp) was a pivotal experience in this process. To date, I am a professor at the Human Movement Biomechanics Research Group at KU Leuven.

My group is conducting internationally highly competitive research on the quantification of whole joint loading using multi-body simulation. Its work is known for the development of subject-specific musculoskeletal models containing a high level of anatomical detail, especially in the context of cerebral palsy. More recent research activities relate to the development of multi-scale modelling of bone and cartilage adaptation and advanced medical imaging of cartilage to understand degenerative joint diseases. In this context, I am to elucidate the role of mechanical loading in cartilage homeostasis and disease using multi-axial bioreactor experiments to unravel the pivotal processes that impair mechano-adaptation in early OA cartilage. I am passionate about this new, highly multi-disciplinary research line combining biomedical sciences (human movement science, musculoskeletal modelling, cartilage biology and imaging) and engineering sciences (multi-scale modelling).

In line with my multi-disciplinary research activities, I am a strong advocate of the use of physics-based modeling and simulation approaches for health-related applications. In my role as director of iSi Health – the KU Leuven Institute of Physics-based Modeling for In Silico Health it is my ambition to accelerate bringing in silico techniques from bed to bench-side, thereby supporting innovation in healthcare.

An integrated, multi-scale approach to understand the role of mechanical loading in cartilage homeostasis and disease: Bridging from joint to chondrocyte.

To design and adapt therapeutic approaches that successfully impact degenerative joint diseases such as osteoarthritis (OA), it is indispensable to understand how articular cartilage is loaded during locomotion. Furthermore, the local cartilage loading needs to be related to the molecular response of the chondrocytes. In my presentation, I aim to demonstrate how multi-scale approaches will leverage unprecedented insights in the mechanobiological response of early osteoarthritic cartilage. More specific, I will identify biomarkers of early OA during locomotion (using multi-scale modeling), relate the mechanical loading to experimentally measured cartilage deformations (using high-field MRI) and identify the effect of the local mechanical cues to constituent expression (using adaptive FE modeling informed by bioreactor experiments).

I am convinced that the insights of such an integrated multi-scale approach will be at the basis of future regenerative interventions that hold the unique potential to arrest early structural cartilage changes that would otherwise progress to end-stage OA.

Núria Gavara

University of Barcelona

Dr. Núria Gavara was trained as a physicist before obtaining a Ph.D. in Cell Biophysics at the Medical School of the University of Barcelona (Spain). She expanded her research skills by taking postdoctoral positions at the National Institutes of Health (NIH, USA) and the Institute of Biophysics at the University of Goettingen (Germany). In 2013, she was appointed as Lecturer in Biomedical Engineering at the School of Engineering and Material Sciences at Queen Mary University of London and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2018. Since 2020, her lab is based at the Medical School of the University of Barcelona, where she holds a Lector Serra Húnter position and financial support from Spain's AEI.

The cytoskeleton, by the numbers

The cell’s cytoskeleton is a fascinating and dynamic structure, both from a biophysical and a biomedical perspective. On the one hand, the cytoskeleton confers mechanical stability to the cell, being composed of 3 polymeric networks that each excel at a particular mechanical role: supporting tension (actin), compression (microtubulues) or strain (intermediate filaments). On the other hand, the cytoskeleton is crucial for cell function (such as migration or division), regulates cell fate, and is involved in a large number of pathologies including cancer and inflammation. Under the fluorescence microscope, the cytoskeleton is a striking structure that perfectly captures the concept of ‘form follows function’. Taking advantage of this, we have developed advanced image analysis pipelines (CSK morphometrcs) that allow us to quantify in a multiparametric approach the amount and intracellular organization of cytoskeletal networks. We use this highthroughput multiplex approach, for example, to better understand the mechanical interplay between the cytoskeleton and the nucleus, and how this can affect nuclear and chromatin states. In addition, when coupled to machine learning algorithms, we use CSK morphometrics for cellular age diagnostics or to monitor cell fate in differentiating stem cells. Finally, when used simultaneously with other biophysical tools, such as Atomic Force Microscopy, we can further characterize the role of cytoskeletal organization in the mechanical properties of adherent cells.
